West Point Officers Club is a project where degree of difficulty was very high. That’s why it is, for sure, a featured project. Sizes are roughly 21’ out x 100’ wide.
1st was a request for a bid to make an awning that would cover a new composite system deck surface. The challenge here was that both the rear and front areas of this unit would be curved.
2nd they host major events and dignitaries so it had to have the right finished look and be engineered certified in strength and build. Painted frame color and a cover color of Cadet Grey were chosen.
After landing the contract we went to work. Opening up the existing railing buttresses we found the strength needed for upright supports. At the back wall we used a common extrusion that could easily be curved around the wall and at the same time allow for awning frame and fabric attachment to still have industry standards. We used all aluminum tubing for this job and it was sent out to be powder coated at Extreme Powder Coating. The Fabric is a firerated 17 oz vinyl laminate under the Ferrari 502 brand.
Perched high on a hill, above the historic Hudson River, we built this awning over some cold winter months in 2010. It is one of our most challenging builds and is holding up well to date. Remarkably it stays up year round and has already gone thru Hurricanes Irene and Sandy. The photos are in chronological order.
